The Pan-Mass Challenge opens on Saturday, August 3 and continues on through Sunday, August 4, 2019. This charity bike race features several routes.

  • There is a Sturbridge to Provincetown Route
  • Wellesley-Babson College to Bourne Route: This route began in 2000 to accommodate riders looking for a more convenient location and a less grueling ride. Since inception, this has become the fastest growing route option of the PMC. The ride starts with what seems like a 25-mile descent and finishes with a combination of rolling hills and flats. This ride begins at 7 a.m. and depending on pace and rest times, can last from 3.5 hours to 11 hours. Most riders arrive at MMA between 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
  • Wellesley-Babson College to Provincetown Route
  • Sturbridge to Wellesley: The original first-day route, this is the longest and most difficult leg of the event. The first 50 miles are quite hilly; riders face long, grueling climbs as well as very fast descents. The last 60 miles are a combination of rolling hills and flats that if not for the first 50 miles, could be considered fairly easy. This ride begins at 5:30 a.m. and depending on pace and rest times, can last from 4 hours to 14 hours. Most riders arrive at MMA between 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is an annual bike-a-thon that has raised more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the world. The PMC was founded in 1980 by Billy Starr, who remains the event’s executive director, an annual cyclist, and a fundraiser. The PMC has since raised $654 million for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The event donates 100 percent of every rider-raised dollar directly to the cause. The PMC generates more than 55 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue and is Dana-Farber’s single largest contributor. The PMC has successfully melded support from committed cyclists, volunteers, corporate sponsors and individual contributors. All are essential to the PMC’s goal and model: to attain maximum fundraising efficiency while increasing its annual gift. The PMC’s hope and aspiration is to provide Dana-Farber’s doctors and researchers with the necessary resources to discover cures for all cancers. Needham, MA – January 31, 2019 – The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is pleased to announce that the professional services firm Deloitte will return as a sponsor for this year’s PMC ride. Deloitte will join the organization’s community of impassioned cyclists, volunteers, and generous donors to support the shared goal of one-day eradicating cancer. As part of its sponsorship, Deloitte professionals will band together to ride the 192-mile route, while also volunteering at the Franklin Water Stop.

“I am thrilled to welcome back Deloitte as a sponsor of this year’s ride,” said Billy Starr, Pan-Mass Challenge founder and executive director. “We are grateful to have continued support from like-minded partners like Deloitte as we look towards our 40th ride this summer with the intention of once again increasing our impact in the fight against cancer.”

“Deloitte is proud to support efforts that produce meaningful results for our community, and it’s hard to find a better example than the PMC,” said Kevin McGovern, Deloitte’s managing partner for New England and a 17-year PMC rider. “This event is amazing in its ability to bring people and organizations together around the single goal of driving cancer research and treatments forward.”

The PMC is the nation’s most successful athletic fundraising event, raising and contributing more money to charity than any other. August 3 and 4, 2019 marks the 40th PMC, where more than 6,300 cyclists and 4,000 volunteers will participate in the two-day bike-a-thon with the goal of raising $58 million to support patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. One hundred percent of every rider-raised dollar goes directly to the cause. If accomplished, this fundraising goal will bring the organization’s 40-year contribution to more than $712 million. The PMC is Dana-Farber’s largest single contributor, raising more than 55 percent of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue.
