Interiors: National Juried Exhibition

Interiors: National Juried Exhibition is a current exhibition at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. The show dates are from January 16 to April 5, 2020. It features the work of 56 artists. 156 artists from 34 states submitted 425 works, 56 of those entries were selected for the exhibition by juror André van der Wende. He announced the four award winners at the gallery talk on January 24. Here are the winners: Jim Peters from North Adams, Massachusetts for “Bed Tent”, Laura Pawlik from Denver, Colorado for “Going Over the Edge”, Johnny DeFeo from Denver, Colorado for “Zion Riverfront Chateau”, and David Bartlett from Farmington Hills, Michigan for “Tang Kou, China Motel Room”.

Interiors, that’s a word that can mean various things to different people. It can be a representational viewpoint from inside a home, workplace, studio or cafe – often it can have a nostalgic sensibility or invoke a feeling of security. A person might identify with a place of worship, or even a forest, to express their internal self. Internalized feelings and emotions may resonate within an artwork. How would you express the concept of interior?

A note from the juror André van der Wende:

The job of selecting 56 works from an initial body of over 425 submissions is not easy. As Museum Director Benton Jones articulated to me, it was a positively “Herculean task!” There is limited space and while I could have easily selected double the number of works, in the end, I was looking for diversity and cohesion at the same time. I hope achieved that. Art is about seeing something as though we’re seeing it again for the first time. I experienced that moment a lot while reviewing the work. All was with merit and I thank everyone for their submissions. It was a true privilege and a pleasure, and you are all to be congratulated!
